Dreadlocks are actually not dirty hair like everybody thinks, it completely depends on the person taking care of the hair just like anyother hair. My reason to have dreadlocks was because I wanted them since I was young and also that seemed so much easier to take care of then normal short hair. Yes afro-texture hair needs to be taken of if you want to keep it looking clean.
I went through a dreadlock journey for almost 2 years, I started with really short locs, that needed bi-weekly maintenence. Maintenence basically means retwisting your hair, retwisting is just to twist up your new growth under your dreadlock to make it lock up with the rest of the hair. I had someone taking care of this for free while it normally is roughly 50$/hr, since I had a full head set of dreadlocks it would probably take more than an hour. The dreadlocks do not look nice at all in the beginning, which is why there is a stage called “ugly stage” but after this stage you get exactly what you want. This is a reason why dreadlocks teach you a lot of patience. I did enjoy the journey a lot and I loved my dreadlocks, but it maked me realize how selfish people can be. I always had a desired length and everytime I reached that length I wanted longer and had a new desired length, but was always happy with my hair. When I was finally tired of them I just had them cut off to start a new journey back to my afro-texture hair.
This journey has taught me a lot but the best lesson that I learned is patience and commitment. In life it’s not easy going through the “ugly stage”, after commitment and patience we can achieve whatever we aim for.
